Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A fine amulet carved from dark-green stone depicting Tawaret (also Tauret), the Egyptian goddess of child birthing and protector of women, children, and the weak. Tawaret is a composite deity with features of a lioness and crocodile, but primarily hippopotamus; all greatly feared but immensely respected animals in ancient Egyptian beliefs. The striding goddess stands atop a narrow ovoid plinth, holds her arms at her sides, and boasts recessed eyes and a rounded snout atop the large head. Size: 1.875" W x 3.1" H (4.8 cm x 7.9 cm).
