Description:

North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 10,000 years ago. An impressive, fossilized molar from a prehistoric woolly mammoth, the ridges and occlusal surface are a dark umber brown and black hue due to the chemicals and minerals present in the environment the tooth fossilized in! Interestingly this tooth displays on a small portion of the occlusal surface - the area that did the grinding when eating - the majority is the plate tubercles on the distal end and molar plates - which may indicate this was a molar from the back of the mouth. Mammoths had 4 molars, which they would go through 6 times as they matured. Mammoth teeth are one of the most complex in the mammal family and can give a very detailed insight into an individual animal's health and age. Looking at just the size of this tooth, it is easy to imagine how massive these prehistoric mammoths were! Size: 8.5" L x 4" W x 6" H (21.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
