Description:

South Italic, Peucetian, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A very fine and large bichrome pottery krater from Peucetia (with Bari and Ruvo as its centers) of a grand scale and an elegant form with twin angular applied handles, a flared rim, and a gracefully sloped concave foot. The surface is covered with extensive stylized geometric decorations in black on a cream-colored slip laid over the buff clay - from the interior rim all the way to the foot and including the exterior handles. These geometric motifs are arranged in paneled bands and registers and present a mesmerizing variety of designs as well as seeingly "W" motifs that are remarkably harmonious. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 10.6" H (26.7 cm x 26.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Orange County, California, USA collection; ex-Edgar Owen Gallery, New Jersey, USA, before 2005
