Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Huastec, ca. 900-1250 CE. Representing life, this human figure is the Aztec wind god, Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl, who created humankind and is identifiable by his J-shaped ear pendants. This symbolic association is somewhat ironic given his hunched-over somewhat frail state. On the other hand, it is precisely this mixed message that exemplifies the dualism of life and death that permeates Huastec and Mexica (Aztec) art. Impressive scale and fine technique. 15-3/4" H. For similar examples, see;Escultura Huasteca En Piedra Catalogo" by Beatriz De La Fuente and Nelly Gutierrez Solana of Instituto de Investigaciones Esteticas, Universidad Nacional Autonoma De Mexico.
