Description:

Pre-Columbian, north/central Peru, Southern Inca, ca. 1470 to 1523 CE. A hefty vessel that is carved from dark gray-black stone with a gently rounded base, a circular body, and a lightly sloped rim surrounding the deep basin. Projecting from the peripheries are eight thick, conical nodules that perhaps doubled as handles while still being decorative. The size and depth of the central basin suggests this vessel was perhaps used as a mortar or an offering vessel, and the lack of interior striating indicates it was perhaps a vessel meant to contain myriad funerary offerings. Size: 10.6" W x 5.375" H (26.9 cm x 13.7 cm)
