Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inupiaq / Inuit, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A large walrus ivory toggling harpoon head, a remarkable example of traditional Arctic maritime hunting technology. Carved with a long, tapered body, the head features a slot at the tip for inserting a sharpened stone blade. A large perforation near the center once secured a rope line, while the hafting end presents a carved spur with a transverse socket drilled perpendicular to the lashing hole. Designed for use from a kayak, the toggling mechanism allowed the ivory head to detach upon impact but remain tethered to the hunter by rope, ensuring control of the prey without risking capsizing. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Alaska Natives are permitted to harvest marine mammals for subsistence purposes and to create and sell authentic Native handicrafts, which may include materials such as whale and walrus ivory.
