Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large seated pottery female figure, created in the distinctive style of the Jalisco shaft-tomb tradition. The figure sits with legs outstretched, her arm raised in a gesture that suggests invocation, chanting, or ritual participation - though one arm is now lost to time. Painted remains of black and red stripes and highlights are visible across the body and face, evoking tattoos or ceremonial body paint. The head is characteristically elongated and oversized, crowned by a broad headband just below a vent opening at the top, which leads into the hollow interior, indicating that this effigy also functioned as a vessel. Remains of red pigment further accentuate the detailed features, from the expressive face to the defined fingers of the surviving hand. Such figures were often placed in shaft tombs as companions or guardians, carrying rich symbolic meaning within ancient West Mexican culture. Size: 9" W x 15.5" H (22.9 cm x 39.4 cm)
