Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A massive terracotta figure representing a seated warrior, likely created as a shaft tomb guardian. The imposing figure sits with bent knees and upright posture, holding a rounded club in one hand and a shallow bowl in the other -symbols of both protection and offering. The exaggerated proportions are classic Jalisco: a tall cylindrical head, angular features, applied ear ornaments, and raised nodules along one shoulder as ritual scarification or adornment. The surface retains reddish and cream slip with areas of blackened manganese mineral deposits from burial. Figures like this were placed deep within shaft tombs as guardians of the deceased, believed to act as protectors and intermediaries between the living and the underworld. Monumental in scale and presence, this work is a powerful example of ancient West Mexican funerary tradition and ceramic artistry. Size: 9" W x 19" H (22.9 cm x 48.3 cm)
