East Africa, Kenya, Maasai people, CA. early 20th century CE. A large elliptical shield constructed from durable buffalo hide stretched and sewn over a wooden frame and wooden handle on the verso. Painted with traditional Maasai pigments in red, black, and white, the front displays symmetrical crescents flanking a vertical band of abstract triangles - motifs that signified the warrior's lineage and ceremonial status. Known as sirata, such symbols often conveyed identity, social role, and achievements within the Maasai community. This shield would have been used in warfare, hunting, and rites of passage, embodying both protection and prestige. Size: 37.75" L x 29.5" W (95.9 cm x 74.9 cm)
