Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A sizable sculpture carved from basalt that depicts a nude woman seated with crossed legs. The ties of her cape are tied neatly around her neck while she grasps the bodies of 2 macaws in her hands. Her dignified visage is framed with a pair of hefty earspools that exemplify her wealth, and a pillar behind her head suggests she holds power or influence. This statue was perhaps a boundary marker for a section of land reserved for its wealthy owner. Size: 10.5" W x 21.625" H (26.7 cm x 54.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to 2000 from his grandfather
