Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a shallow basin, a flat base, and short walls with a lightly-flared rim. The interior of the bowl displays an intricate brown-painted jaguar - replete with a bulbous body, sinuous tail, retracted legs, and a wide face exhibiting ovoid eyes and bared fangs - atop a cream-hued ground. The rim is lined with a trio of brown-painted striations on the interior as well as a solid brown stripe on top, and the underside is unadorned. Size: 8.75" W x 1.75" H (22.2 cm x 4.4 cm).
