Description:

Oceania, Micronesia, Mortlock Islands, mid-20th century CE. An impressive fish hook carved from wood and wrapped in twisted vegetal fiber cordage. The hook features a sweeping, sinuous profile, its gently curving form capped by a sharply barbed point - smoothed with age and use. Both ends of the wood shaft are tightly wrapped with a thick, plaited fiber cord that terminates in a long rope with a loop. The imposing scale suggest its potential use catching large Ruvettus (Oilfish) or perhaps sharks. Size of wood hook: 4.5" W x 7.5" H (11.4 cm x 19 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.; the cord adds 21" L (53.3 cm) when laid flat.
