Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A very fine and attractive canchero vessel (also known as a corn popper) in a beautiful bichrome finish of creamy beige against a red ground. The large water dipper presents in a saucer form with a small circular opening and a long figural handle with the head of a male, perhaps a warrior, modeled in relief. Painted on the upper walls surrounding the opening are four stylized floral or astral motifs. On the reverse, the artist incised an elaborate design that may depict a butterfly - in near perfect symmetry. A wonderful example from this ancient Andean culture! Size: 11.75" L x 4.125" H (29.8 cm x 10.5 cm)

Like birds, butterflies were sky creatures believed to serve as messengers between humankind and the celestial deities. In addition their penchant for metamorphoses symbolized transitory qualities aspired to by shamans.
