Description:

Pre-Columbian, Basin of Mexico, Postclassic Period, Morelos (Tlahuica and Xochimilca), related to Aztec Empire, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fascinating and rare style of figure, depicting a woman with a relatively large head, broad shoulders, and thin arms and hands that rest on her stomach. The surface is painted grey with the remains of red pigment around its grooves, especially the hairline, neck, and mouth. Each ear is pierced as if the figure once wore earrings made of gold or some other precious material. The people living in Morelos at this time are sometimes considered Aztecs because of linguistic, cultural, and social similarities with the people to their north; during the Late Postclassic period the region was conquered by the Aztec kings Itzcoatl and Motecuhzoma I and became one of the tributary provinces of the Aztecs. Size: 4" L x 6.2" W x 8.15" H (10.2 cm x 15.7 cm x 20.7 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
