Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 1250 to 1500 CE. A large and intact Narino pottery footed bowl, hand-built in burnished terracotta and decorated with bands of painted linear ornament. The vessel is distinguished by its deep hemispherical body raised on a tall flaring foot, a form that balances elegance with monumentality. Across the body and stem are wide, dark-red to black painted stripes, applied in rhythmic intervals to accentuate the vessel's contours. The surface retains areas of mineral deposits and earthen encrustation from centuries of burial. Bowls of this type are characteristic of the Narino culture, centered in the highland valleys of southern Colombia near the Ecuadorian border. The people of this region developed a highly distinctive ceramic tradition, often employing geometric banding and resist-painted decoration to create striking contrasts across large vessels. Size: 10.7" Diameter x 11.8" H (27.2 cm x 30 cm)

Such bowls were likely used in ritual feasting or ceremonial contexts, underscoring the importance of communal gatherings and the sharing of chicha (maize beer) or other offerings. This example, with its unusually large scale and well-preserved surface, reflects both the artistic refinement and the ceremonial significance of Narino ceramic production during the late pre-Hispanic period.
