Description:

Native American, St. Claire County, illinois, ca. 2000 BCE. An exceptionally large and finely shaped full-grooved axe head, masterfully pecked and ground from dense stone with a pronounced full circumferential groove just below the median ridge. The surface is smooth and gently polished from centuries of use and handling, and the form is symmetrical with a balanced, robust body tapering to a rounded bit and butt. Tools of this scale and refinement were labor-intensive to produce and may have held ceremonial or prestige value in addition to their utilitarian function. Large full-grooved axes such as this are most commonly attributed to Early to Middle Archaic peoples of the Midwestern and Eastern Woodlands of North America. Size: 9.25" L x 5" H (23.5 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, purchased from Stuart Struever, 2000.
