**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl of a sizable form with a stable base, broad walls, and a thin rim that surrounds the shallow basin. The basin is decorated with a trio of large, red-orange ovals as well as a petite dot in the middle, and the rim is lined with a solid layer of red-orange slip. Large vessels from shaft tomb cultures like this example were perhaps used as containers for offerings to the deceased upon burial. Size: 12.625" W x 3.5" H (32.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from two large pieces and stabilization to a couple of short fissures, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Abrasions and nicks to foot, rim, and basin and light fading to pigment. Nice manganese deposits and remains of original pigment throughout.
