Description:

Pre-Columbian, probably Colombia, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A fabulous handbuilt pottery head of a trapezoidal shape with a peaceful countenance, a headdress adorned with a petite animal on one end, one extending arm with its hand placed over his heart or chest, and his mouth open as if singing or chanting. At first glance, this form presents contours that resemble the terracotta figures of Veracruz, Mexico; however, upon closer examination its tranquil character departs from the visages of Vera Cruz. What's more its features - those large, coffee bean shaped eyes, that nicely curved nose, and impressed mouth - have more in common with the figures created by the indigenous of Colombia. A wonderful example! Custom stand. Size: 6.75" W x 7.5" H; (17.1 cm x 19 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm)on stand

Provenance: Ex-Nikotovich collection acquired before 1980
