Description:

Starts at $550 A large and impressive Pre-Columbian urn shaped vessel of a type known from the ancient Nicoya region of Costa Rica, circa 1000 - 1350 A.D. This example is of the Greater Nicoya, Pataky variety/style, and measures approximately 10 1/2" tall. The form is that of a bulbous, tall, ring-footed urn, which remains in excellent, original condition. The exterior features vibrant original polychrome decoration in black, red and orange against a cream/white slip. The ancient artist employed a variety of abstract symbolic and geometric patterns, prominently featuring a band of animals that appear to be running Tapirs around the rim. The foot features a band of what may be Jaguars, rendered upside down. This is symbolically important, and may imply that the bottom register is depicting a scene in the Underworld- a mirror-like inversion of what is happening in the earthly realm above, lending a symbolic sense of duality to the scene. Provenance: Former B. Restauri, private Florida, USA collection. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

The surface is lightly etched with root marks, another hallmark of the authenticity and age of this piece.
