Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast region, Veracruz culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A nearly life-sized pottery head, masterfully modeled and once part of a larger sculptural figure. The calm visage displays half-closed eyes, a broad flared nose adorned with nostril ornaments, and slightly parted lips revealing prominent, possibly filed teeth - a form of dental modification favored in the era. A wide headband, incised with geometric motifs and framed by dotted relief, crowns the head, with hair or textile across the forehead. One ear bears an elaborate rectangular ornament featuring a diminutive face surrounded by rows evoking strings of beads. A prominent beaded necklace encircles the neck, enhancing the figure's distinguished and ceremonial presence. Size: 8" W x 8" H (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.
