Description:

Roman, North Africa, Imperial period, Carthage, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A charming yet sizable, wheel-thrown redware pottery dish with a low, squat form and a flat base. Its broad walls rise to a shallow basin, distinguished by a groove encircling the rim, suggesting it was designed to hold a lid. The central basin is decorated with stamped motifs of alternating palmettes and clusters of three circles. Known as African Terra Sigillata, this pottery exemplifies the technique of sealing a red slip onto the vessel during firing. Produced in Roman North Africa, these widely traded objects were a leading export of the region during the 3rd and 4th centuries CE throughout the Roman Empire. Size: 14.6" Diameter x 2.3" H (37.1 cm x 5.8 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005
