Lot 121C
Romano-Egyptian, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare and imposing Romano-Egyptian terracotta vessel stand, this large architectural form was made to elevate and stabilize jars and rounded-bottom containers in daily use. With its broad, flaring rim and wide circular base, it reads like a miniature column drum, an object built for the practical physics of ancient kitchens, workshops, and storerooms. The stand is wheel-made in a warm buff clay, its surface softened by age and faint mineral accretions. The profile is elegantly hourglass-shaped: a thickened upper lip creates a secure seat for a vessel, while the body narrows at the waist before expanding again into a grounded foot. This simple geometry is quietly sophisticated, distributing weight evenly and preventing tipping, while also allowing air to circulate beneath the supported jar. Size: 10.3" Diameter x 6.1" H (26.2 cm x 15.5 cm)
In Roman Egypt, terracotta stands such as this were essential domestic tools. They could be used to hold water jars, amphorae, or cooking pots, keeping them upright on uneven surfaces and protecting their bases from damage. In some contexts, stands also helped position vessels near heat sources, making them useful in food preparation and warming. Visible age cracks and surface wear speak to real use rather than mere survival. As a utilitarian object, it offers a direct and unusually tangible connection to everyday life in Roman-period Egypt, where the humble necessities of storage and cooking were solved with the same clarity of form that defines the era's best design.
