Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Senufo culture, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A monumental wooden hornbill, known as a porpianong, which represents one of the most important emblems of the Poro men's society, and a highly revered animal spirit, central to the Senufo creation story, in which the hornbill soars across the land, scattering and sowing the seeds of life. The bird's form is boldly abstracted: a simplified body with broad wings and an oversized beak curving dramatically over the stomach, a deliberate phallic and fertility symbol signifying virility and the continuation of the community. Sculptures like this were traditionally placed outside villages to signal that the Poro society was in session, marking the presence of sacred gatherings and initiations. The Poro society is a men's initiation and leadership association that serves as both a spiritual and social institution, guiding moral education and community rituals while preserving sacred knowledge.
