Description:

East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 16th to 19th century CE. A finely crafted stone ceremonial blade known as a hu, modeled after ancient Neolithic harvesting tools. This imposing implement features an elongated trapezoidal silhouette with a ground blade edge and five evenly spaced perforations along the top - likely intended for hafting or symbolic binding. Fashioned from a dense, earthy-toned stone, possibly serpentine, the surface remains remarkably smooth with minimal signs of functional wear, suggesting a primarily ritual or display role. While the form echoes prototypes from Liangzhu and Longshan cultures, this example reflects the Ming to Qing era’s revivalist interest in antiquity and classical forms. Housed in a custom-made acrylic display case for elegant preservation and presentation. Though their precise purpose remains debated, such blades are believed to have served ceremonial functions linked to seasonal rites, ancestral offerings, or displays of elite status. Size: 18" L x 4.75" W (45.7 cm x 12.1 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.
