Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Shan States, ca. 18th to early 19th century. A monumental marble head of the Buddha carved in the serene and distinctive style of the Shan people - one of Myanmar's most significant ethnic group. This grand representation of Buddha Gautama Sakyamuni radiates tranquility through his gently closed, downcast eyes and faint, benevolent smile - embodying the compassionate nature of the Enlightened One. His smooth rounded features, and elongated ears suggest both divine wisdom and noble lineage. Crowning the head is a prominent ushnisha - symbol of spiritual enlightenment - shaped in the likeness of a Burmese stupa, reflecting Shan Buddhist architectural influence. Subtle remains of the original polychrome pigment are still visible, particularly on the eyes, lips and brows, offering a glimpse into its original vibrant appearance. Size: 12" W x 19" H (30.5 cm x 48.3 cm); 27" H (68.6 cm) on included custom stand.
