Description:

Pre-Columbian, Greater Antilles Islands, Caribbean Sea, Hispaniola, Taino culture., ca. 1000 - 1500 CE. Simple but simply wonderful stone yoke from the first peoples Columbus encountered in his 1492 cruise vacation to the Islands of the Caribbean. Carved of a variegated green and brown stone in typical Taino yoke form, but in the style of a simple snake, its head emerging from its coiled body. Size: 10" W x 16.25" H (25.4 cm x 41.3 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.

This item has been tested and declared ancient by CIRAM Labs in France and comes with a certificate stating such. According to current thinking, Taíno stone yokes were ceremonial, symbolic objects tied to the ballgame, elite identity, and spiritual belief—not functional belts worn in daily or athletic use.

Provenance: ex-Amrhein collection, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, USA, collected from 1985 to 2010
