Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A pendant made of pale green steatite that looks abstractly like a pointy-eared bat head flanked by long wings that widen and curve at their ends. An incised "V" form below the head on one side contributes to the bat-like appearance. The head is pierced laterally for suspension. Bat-wing pendants served as grave goods made from sacred greenstone. For example, in a burial from the Venezuelan Andes (which was culturally close to Tairona), archaeologists found a bat-wing pendant interred alongside raw materials of serpentine and steatite. Size: 9.4" W x 1.5" H (23.9 cm x 3.8 cm)
