Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A grand female terracotta figure sitting with crossed legs and hands placed upon her knees. She dons an impressively ornate headdress or coiffure comprised of countless coils, a double pectoral, bracelets, and a long skirt. She has a characteristically enlarged head, her face detailed with an intriguing blend of naturalistic and stylized features. Her visage presents an energetic expression with wide bitumen pupiled eyes, a pronounced nose, and most intriguingly an open mouth with filed teeth. With a parted mouth and her well postured seated position perhaps she is engaged in a chanting, singing, or praying ritual. Beyond this, I truly appreciate the sculptor's attention to detail. Just look at those nailbeds on her toes! Size: 8.25" W x 14" H (21 cm x 35.6 cm)
