Description:

Central Asia, India and Pakistan, Indo-Persian culture, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. An impressive forged-iron mace of a relatively lightweight design employed by cavalry soldiers. The mace bears a conical iron cap and six claw-ended fins that radiate around the central body. The central bulge on each fin focuses the swing power on one point rather than over a larger area which ensures substantial structural deformations to any impacted armor or body part. The mace head is mounted atop a hollow - rather than solid - pole to facilitate its use by horse-riding warriors. Size: 28.7" L x 2.125" W (72.9 cm x 5.4 cm)

For a stylistically similar example with a pointed top spike and silver inlays, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 36.25.1905.
