Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, West Kalimantan, Kantu (Kontuk) Dayak people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden guardian hampatong (literally "figure" or "statue") meant to stand watch over rice paddies and scare away potential predators or thieves. The slender figure presents with fused legs beneath wide hips, a slender waist with pointed shoulders, a tapered neckline, and an ovoid head. The minimalist countenance is comprised of impressed circular eyes, a slender nose above thin lips, smooth cheeks, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a bald top. Smooth patina has developed across the entire composition. Size: 2.125" W x 13.1" H (5.4 cm x 33.3 cm); 14.5" H (36.8 cm) on included custom stand.
