Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden model of an outrigger canoe with a narrow canoe body, a wooden lattice framework, a rectangular fishing platform with a pair of miniature oars, three lengthy outrigger booms, and a conical float. The top shell of the canoe is fastened to the lower body with several lengths of thread, and additional thread forms the bonds between the outrigger booms, canoe, and float. Inside the canoe is a petite model of an ovoid water scoop with a slender handle and a deep cavity. This is a rare example of a canoe model based on the closed shell design and the inclusion of a fishing platform on the outrigger booms. Size (w/ outrigger booms): 14.6" L x 7.25" W (37.1 cm x 18.4 cm)
