Description:

Central Africa, Sudan, ca. late 19th century CE. A forged-steel sword of a traditional Sudanese style known as a kaskara. The tapered, double-edged blade features a trio of shallow fullers along the top half with the two lateral fullers terminating just above a pair of mirrored crescent moons. The blocky hand guard is situated beneath the tubular handle and compressed circular pommel. Kaskara swords like this example were invaluable assets to men throughout Sudan, Chad, and Eritrea and were prevalent weapons during the Siege of Khartoum (March 13, 1884 - January 26, 1885). Accompanying the kaskara is a form-fitting leather sheath with a reinforced tip. Size (w/ handle): 3.9" W x 36.6" H (9.9 cm x 93 cm); (blade): 31.9" L (81 cm)
