Description:

Ancient Near East, Levant, Late Bronze Age, ca. 1500 to 1200 BCE. A limestone votive bust carved in an abstract, devotional style, representing a worshipper or supplicant. The figure is shown with squared shoulders, arms bent forward, and hands holding an object, perhaps a tablet. The face, though weathered, retains incised brows and recessed eyes set above a broad nose, while the mouth area is now chipped away. The sculptor’s simplified treatment emphasizes symbolic presence over naturalism, imbuing the bust with solemn, enduring power. Such votive figures were placed in temples and shrines across the Levant, serving as perpetual stand-ins for their donors in ritual contexts. They reflect the religious practices of the Late Bronze Age, when devotion was expressed through durable offerings designed to endure for eternity. The blocky form and meditative stillness of this bust capture both the austerity and the spiritual intensity of the period. Size: 3.1" L x 6.1" W x 8.6" H (7.9 cm x 15.5 cm x 21.8 cm); 10.2" H (25.9 cm) on included custom stand.
