Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing dynasty to Republic period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large Chinese archaistic bi disc carved from dense gray stone, modeled after ancient ritual jades associated with antiquity and cosmological symbolism. The disc is precisely drilled with a central aperture and finished on both faces with an evenly spaced cross-hatched lattice pattern, recalling Neolithic and Han dynasty prototypes while clearly reflecting later revivalist taste. Archaistic stone carvings of this type were produced during the late Qing and early Republic periods as scholarly objects, display pieces, or architectural and interior elements, appealing to antiquarian interests and reverence for China's early ritual forms. The disciplined geometry of the incised pattern contrasts with the muted gray stone and areas of surface wear, giving the piece a restrained and intentional presence. Size: 9.9" Diameter (25.1 cm)

Well-proportioned and visually balanced, this bi disc exemplifies the continued cultural value of ancient forms reinterpreted through later craftsmanship and historical awareness.
