Lois Green Cohen (American, b. 1919). Watercolor, mid 20th century. A beautiful landscape featuring a barn in winter by California watercolorist Lois Green Cohen. The red-roofed, white-washed barn - iconic of American vernacular architecture - anchors this composition at the lower left and is set in a tranquil landscape with a bit of snow covering a small hill to the right and leafless trees creating elegant silhouettes against the soft azure skies. A charming watercolor that captures a chapter of Americana that is sadly fading away, symbolic of the simpler life of a bygone era. Size of sight view: 14" L x 21" W (35.6 cm x 53.3 cm) Size of frame: 25.5" L x 32.5" W (64.8 cm x 82.6 cm)

Born in Chicago, Lois Green Cohen studied at Carnegie Tech (Pittsburg) with Samuel Rosenberg prior to moving to Los Angeles in 1938 where she studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and UCLA. An impressive watercolorist, Cohen was a member of the California Watercolor Society and was included in the exhibition entitled, "This Side of Eden: Images of Steinbeck's California" by the Steinbeck Center. In addition, she created paintings for projection at Griffith Observatory. One may learn more about Lois Green Cohen in "Artists in California, 1786-1940" (2002) by Edan Hughes and "California Watercolors 1850-1970" (2003) by Gordon T. McClelland and Jay T. Last.
