Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A wonderful group of two intriguing, delicate fans comprised of tightly-woven plant fibers and topped with colorful feathers. The shorter fan has a broad trapezoidal body bound with five horizontal lengths of twisted string, dozens of braided arms that extend upwards, and orange-yellow feathers attached to the tips. The taller fan has a rod-shaped handle bound with lengths of string, several braided tendrils projecting from the top, and wispy white feathers attached to the tips. A fabulous ensemble of ancient tools of comfort! Size of largest (white feathers): 9.5" W x 10.25" H (24.1 cm x 26 cm).

  • Condition: Shorter fan has loss to lower tip of body that may have been a handle. Both fans have minor loosening to woven and braided fibers, light tears to feathers, and light insect damage. Nice earthen deposits throughout, and feathers still retain their natural coloration.
