Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A group of two hand-built pottery figures depicting a touching scene of mothers holding their children. The shorter figure leans over while holding one arm curled beneath the chin, the elbow resting on one raised leg, and the other arm is held by a standing toddler. The larger figure has a conical head and sits with legs extended in front of the rigid abdomen, with rounded shoulders and perky breasts, and curved arms reaching down to support the child in her lap. Both highly burnished figures are covered in soft orange slip that imbues them with the characteristic presentation of ancient West Mexico! Size of largest (conical head): 3.25" W x 4.8" H (8.3 cm x 12.2 cm).

Provenance: ex-Merrin Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s
