Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic periods, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. Two wonderful amulets of the dwarf god Bes, carved from a pale-brown steatite. Bes watched over the household, women and children in particular, protecting them with the magical hieroglyphic sign "sa." Each depiction of Bes is shown in a highly-stylized form, including finely-rendered hands, feet, bodies, and genitalia. Both figures have striated beards, often interpreted as the mane of a lion given his ardent protection of the household and, in later texts, everything good in the world. Each figure is laterally perforated for suspension. Suspension cord for photography use only. Size of largest: 1.1" H (2.8 cm).

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
