Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mezcala, ca. 500-200 BCE adn 250- 650 CE. These Mezcala stone figures both show appealing stylization of human physiognomy carved from a beautiful deep, green speckled stone. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via a string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. This particular pair makes for a wonderful understanding of the stylistic evolution of Mezcala sculpture. The older figure in the lot shows Olmec influence with its smoother contours and elongated head, while the later piece demonstrates the influence of the great metropolis of Teotihuacan, with its emphasis on geometry and line, resonant of that civilization's breathtaking architectural wonders such as the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan! 6 1/4"T and 5 3/4"T
