Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom/Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1550 to 712 BCE. A pair of amulets, one made of a deep blue faience, the other of black/brown stone, each in the shape of a headrest. The stone example is probably New Kingdom (similar to the example linked below) and the faience one is probably from the Third Intermediate Period. The headrest was a powerful symbol, based on real items that the Egyptians used in life and in death to support the head - the seat of life. The Book of the Dead states that the headrest was important to protect the head of the deceased, and save it from decapitation by evil forces. Size of largest: 0.95" W x 0.6" H (2.4 cm x 1.5 cm)
