Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A fine set of two textile belt fragments comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of crimson, fuchsia, sage, aqua, coffee, espresso, and lavender. Both fragments boast highly abstract geometric motifs, with the shorter displaying a pair of abstract avian figures with bulbous heads and broad tails. The triangular shapes which alternate directions between both fragments depict abstract sting rays, and the largest example on the longer belt even has a petite pair of eyes. Mounted atop a fabric display panel. Size of largest (sting ray w/ eyes): 30.5" L x 2" W (77.5 cm x 5.1 cm); size (display panel): 45.5" L x 20.75" W (115.6 cm x 52.7 cm).

  • Condition: Both items are fragments of larger belts. Light fraying and loosening to some interior and peripheral fibers, with minor fading and staining to coloration, and light creasing. Iconography and colors are still visible and vivid.
