Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 700 CE; Northern Peru, Sican (Lambayeque) culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A charming set of two mold-formed pottery figures, both standing upon wide-set feet. The taller Moche figure has a portly abdomen, rounded shoulders, an intricate necklace, and a squared head. The shorter Sican/Lambayeque figure has a flat profile with a roughly triangular head, petite arms, and perky ears. Each figure is covered in earthy red slip. Size of largest (Moche): 4.25" W x 6.875" H (10.8 cm x 17.5 cm).

Provenance: private Allison collection, Kent, Washington, USA, inherited in the mid-1970s

  • Condition: Moche figure has small area of restoration to tip of nose. Both figures have small nicks and light abrasions to legs, bodies, and heads, with fading to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
