Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia to Ecuador (Carchi) region, Narino Highlands, ca. 1250 CE. A beautiful set of two hand-built pottery bowls, each with a wide body and a rounded rim atop a petite circular foot. The exterior of the smaller bowl features six trios of cream-hued vertical bands atop a brown ground, and the interior shows a trio of circular and tooth-shaped forms set within a brown and red linear and geometric motifs. The larger bowl displays its buff surface on the exterior, and the interior has an enclosed quartet of minimalist monkeys within a ground of abstract geometric motifs in cream, brown, and red hues. Size of largest (monkeys): 8.125" W x 4" H (20.6 cm x 10.2 cm).

  • Condition: Large areas of repair to both bowls with small losses and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to feet, bodies, and rims, with light fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and nice manganese blooms throughout.
