Description:

Egypt, Late to Ptolemaic period, ca. 700 to 30 BCE. Twenty-one assorted bronze Ptolemaic coins. A great study or beginner lot! Size: 1/2" to 1-5/8" in diameter.

After the demise of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy, one of Alexander's companions and generals, took over, crowning himself as king in 305 BCE and reigning over an important and prosperous Hellenistic monarchy. Ptolemaic culture was a blend of Egyptian and Greek traditions, and akin to other Hellenistic kingdoms, came to its demise as the Romans rose to power. Famously, the end of the Ptolemaic kingdom is highlighted by the story of Queen Cleopatra, Marc Antony, and Julius Caesar.
