Description:

Old World, Acheulean tradition, ca. 1.6 million to 200,000 years ago. A group of three grey- and amber-hued flaked stones, in the characteristic ovoid shape, knapped from large pieces of chert. One stone has a thin profile and a pronounced butt end, while the other two are wider and have cutting edges lining the circumference of the tools. The Acheulean stone tool tradition, named after the location in France where tools of this kind were first identified in 1847, represented a technological revolution. These items were likely manufactured by homo erectus, a close ancestor of modern humans, and was made to be used in a variety of tasks. For most of human history - over a million years - this was the dominant technology. Axes like these have a nice heft and fit squarely in even a modern hand. Size (smallest): 4.7" L (11.9 cm); size (medium): 4.875" L (12.4 cm); size (largest): 5" L (12.7 cm).
