Description:

West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A group of cast-brass figural weights for weighing gold. The largest depicts a man standing atop a circular base with a club in his right hand and a large stick in his left. The medium-sized figure shows a sinuous man bending over to pick up a small animal atop a rectangular base. The smallest displays a man smoking a pipe and holding a bird under one arm while standing on a rectangular base. Fine layers of dark golden-brown patina envelops each figure. Size of largest (wielding club): 1.25" W x 3.1" H (3.2 cm x 7.9 cm).
