Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A striking group of three Pre-Columbian stone Penates, attributed to the Mixtec–Michoacán cultural sphere of West Mexico. Each figure is carved from dense greenstone and displays the abstract, geometric iconography characteristic of domestic guardian figures used throughout the region. The forms are columnar, with incised triangular and linear patterns indicating stylized facial features, ribbing, and body segmentation. These minimalist carvings—reduced to symbolic geometry—are deeply rooted in Mesoamerican household devotion, where Penates were kept as protective spirits overseeing lineage continuity, fertility, and ancestral presence within the home. Size of tallest: 3" W x 10.5" H (7.6 cm x 26.7 cm); 13.5" H (34.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Such groups are increasingly scarce, and the harmonious scaling and shared carving conventions make these an attractive ensemble for collectors of West Mexican or broader Mesoamerican stone iconography.
