West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful gathering of thirty-six cast-brass weights used for measuring and weighing gold. Two weights are rectangular with no detailing; three are pyramidal in form; one is triangular; one has a five-petaled flower form; one is shaped like a crosshair; one is cuboid; two are slender bars with narrow hash marks; two are barrel-shaped with carinated midsections; four bear small swastikas; and the remaining nineteen have intricate linear and geometric motifs. The weights of these weights range from 6.5 grams to 71.6 grams. Size of largest: 1.625" L x 1" W (4.1 cm x 2.5 cm).
