Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine gathering of 37 small items from ancient Peru. The smaller frame contains two carved bone bloodletters/piercers, a small stone bird, and a cast-copper miniature tumi with an anthropomorphic head finial with eyes inlaid with white stones. The larger frame displays 33 carved shell amulets in teardrop, rectangular, bulb-form, and oblong shapes, with many displaying drilled suspension holes or traces of such holes. Items mounted against fabric-lined panels inside of frames. Size of largest (bone awl): 2.6" L (6.6 cm); size (smaller frame): 7.875" W x 6.1" H (20 cm x 15.5 cm); size (larger frame): 10.625" W x 12.75" H (27 cm x 32.4 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Both bone awls repaired from one or more pieces with light adhesive residue along break lines. Small losses to copper tumi and some shell amulets. Nice patina to copper tumi. One amulet in larger frame is disconnected from adhesive.
