Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE; Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A lot of four Pre-Columbian pottery vessels representing two distinct and celebrated traditions of ancient South and Central America. The first pair, from the Narino culture of highland Colombia, consists of a pedestal bowl and a rounded jar. The pedestal bowl is raised on a flaring foot, its burnished red-brown surface bearing traces of painted decoration, while the jar is adorned with linear red slip designs that emphasize its rounded form. Narino ceramics are known for their bold use of negative-resist painting and geometric patterning, reflecting both aesthetic refinement and ritual function in Andean society. The second pair, from the Gran Cocle culture of central Panama, includes a globular jar with twin strap handles and a low, boat-shaped vessel intended to represent a fish with applied fins and a petite face of bulging eyes and an open mouth. Size of largest (pedestal): 6.5" Diameter x 4.1" H (16.5 cm x 10.4 cm)

Cocle ceramics are prized for their variety of forms and complex painted or incised designs, often linked to ceremonial and funerary contexts. The restrained forms here highlight the practical as well as symbolic aspects of pottery in Cocle life, serving as containers for food, drink, or offerings. Together, these vessels demonstrate the regional diversity of Pre-Columbian ceramic traditions, contrasting the linear precision of Narino decoration with the sculptural creativity of Cocle forms. Their survival across centuries offers a glimpse into the daily and ritual lives of the peoples of Colombia and Panama.
